10 Best Albums of 2012: Critics' Picks

An Awesome Wave'

With debut album "An Awesome Wave," English alt-rock newcomers Alt-J proved that their folk-tinged arrangements aren't half as gimmicky as their band name (which is a reference to the Mac-OSX command for the "delta" sign). The group's stuttering soundscapes can recall Radiohead at their most cohesive moments, but "An Awesome Wave" -- which took home this year's Barclacard Mercury Prize -- is the sound of a unique new voice in rock music exploring its creative sandbox.

'Sun'

Six years after her last proper album, Chan Marshall reminded indie rock fans of her songwriting process when her self-produced "Sun" was finally released in September. A stylistically bolder effort that became Cat Power's highest-charting album to date, "Sun" fused guitars, synths, powerful percussion and gorgeously vulnerable vocals together, forming a set of songs that was worth the wait.

'Attack on Memory'

2012 was a great year for delectable hooks to be packaged in gleeful punk blasts -- see Japandroids' "Celebration Rock" or Metz' self-titled LP, for instance -- but none of the other upstarts could hold a candle to Cloud Nothings' measured intensity on "Attack on Memory." From the drawn-out vitriol of the nearly nine-minute "Wasted Days" to the exhausted pop-punk closer "Cut You," the album contrasts the darker edges of Dylan Baldi's songwriting with catchy choruses the whole head-banging family can enjoy.

'Wrecking Ball'

Make no mistake: Bruce Springsteen is not slowing down whatsoever. The Boss has always been at his best when his full-lengths have cutting mission statements, and "Wrecking Ball" smashes the relative complacency of 2009's "Working on a Dream" by taking aim at Wall Street, the government and an economy that cannot be deemed satisfying. At 63, Springsteen has released an album that harnesses the quiet fury building inside the rock legend, and because of that, more than lives up to its title.

'Bloom'

Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally officially enjoyed "breakout" status when Beach House's majestic third album, "Teen Dream," was released in 2010. And while the duo's previous effort contained more immediately arresting songs like "Norway" and "10 Mile Stereo," "Bloom" works more slowly to reveal itself but proved just as engrossing upon repeated listens. Legrand has become a master of emoting her dreamy abstractions, calmly guiding tracks like "New Year" as they twist and bend around her.

Taylor Swift was an incredible teenage songwriter; now, she is an incredible adult songwriter. Her fourth album "Red" will likely be remembered for its sonic risks, with the Avrilized pop of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and the dubstep wobbles of "I Knew You Were Trouble" pushing the country star out of her comfort zone. Yet a more subtle, and arguably more important, shift occurred the moment Swift decided to ease off the fairy-tale fodder and sing about how nice it is for a guy to pull her chair out and help her in. One of contemporary music's biggest stars could not have glided into her lower 20s more gracefully, and for that, she should be saluted.

'Devotion'

U.K. singer-songwriter Jessie Ware's "Devotion" is even more staggering of an achievement when you consider the fact that it is her debut album; few, if any, albums released in 2012 exuded the kind of quality control and confidence found in this long-player. 28-year-old Ware often has her vocal style compared to Sade, but the diversity of her sound is entirely her own: who else could flaunt the elegant power of "Wildest Moments," jazzy cooing of "Swan Song" and heartbreaking romance of "Taking in Water" with nary a misstep? Wherever Ware's career leads, she at least touched down long enough to release a front-to-back stunner.

'Kaleidoscope Dream'

Reinvention is difficult in mainstream music, and if you don't believe us, ask MC Hammer how his post-"U Can't Touch This" gangster rap career worked out. But sometimes all you need an album full of forward-thinking music -- other times, all you need is an undeniable single. Fortunately, 26-year-old Miguel, whose 2010 debut album "All I Want Is You" started outside the top 100 spots on the Billboard 200, had both: sophomore disc "Kaleidoscope Dream" is a sumptuous slice of rhythmic pop that actually takes risks, and lead single "Adorn" rightly became a smash. Miguel's stock has soared in the past three months, and we can't wait to see what direction he takes next.

'good kid, m.A.A.d city'

In 2012, these artists did not put out solo albums: Drake, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Young Jeezy, Eminem. Thank goodness we had Kendrick Lamar to eliminate that mega-star vacuum and deliver the most breathtaking hip-hop debut since "The College Dropout." Dismissing luxurious rap tropes in favor of gritty storytelling, Lamar's unhinged flow and brilliant turns of phrases worked on the purposefully ignorant "Backseat Freestyle" and the death meditation "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst." Executive producer Dr. Dre shows up on the closing track "Compton" to pass the blunt, then pass the torch, but even the West Coast legend can't overshadow an MC who will stop at nothing to make his unique voice ring out.

'Channel Orange'

Frank Ocean's thrilling "Nostalgia, Ultra" clocked in at No. 4 on our 2011 critics' albums list, and the R&B prodigy's Def Jam debut, "Channel Orange," promptly expanded upon that unofficial release in every way imaginable. As the Odd Future member waxes poetic on everything from drugs to God to unrequited love, it's hard not to be distracted by the most soothing male voice in years -- not to mention an album's worth of slick beats and hummable hooks. Like Billboard.com's favorite album of 2011, Adele's "21," "Channel Orange" will go down as the moment where its artist's genius was fully realized by an overwhelming number of fans, hungry for new spins on familiar ideas. 2012 was a fantastic year for full-lengths, but Ocean's color was the most vibrant.

Topic: JEEZ: (PHOTO) Man Breaks Manhood While Having Fun With Girlfriend

This is simply unbelievable as it is weird – never heard of a broken p*nis before until now. According to TMZ, MMA fighter Ray Elbe – who competed on “Ultimate Fighter 9″ — had to be rushed to a hospital in Malaysia earlier this month… after he broke his man-hood during s*x; a condition that required 10 stitches to fix.

According to the fighter, he was having fun with his girlfriend who was “on top” … when she bounced a little too high, and crunched his erect manhood.

According to Ray, his p*nis “fractured” … and “blood was everywhere” and immediately passed out from the pain. It was at a nearby hospital that he underwent surgery to close the wound and repair a “slight tear” in his urinary tube.

Ray is expected to make full recovery — and was ordered to take “anti-erection pills” for two weeks.

Topic: Five Nigerians Emerge As Richest Pastors In Africa - Forbes

Africans view the wealth of men of God from different perspectives. While some think there’s nothing bad living a good life filled with abundant wealth, others believe men of God are just supposed have enough, and that their calling doesn't require luxury spending.

Whichever way you choose to look at this, everyone has a right to their opinion.
Here are the five pastors Forbes think are the richest in Africa.

1. Bishop David Oyedepo

Affiliation: Living Faith World Outreach Ministry, aka Winners Chapel

Estimated net worth: $150 million

David Oyedepo is Nigeria’s wealthiest preacher. Ever since he founded the Living Faith World Outreach Ministry in 1981, it has grown to become one of Africa’s largest congregations. The Faith Tabernacle, where he hosts three services every Sunday, is Africa’s largest worship center, with a seating capacity of 50,000. Oyedepo owns four private jets and homes in London and the United States. He also owns Dominion Publishing House, a thriving publishing company that publishes all his books (which are often centered on prosperity). He founded and owns Covenant University, one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary institutions, and Faith Academy, an elite high school.

2. Chris Oyakhilome

Church: Believers’ Loveworld Ministries, a.k.a Christ Embassy

Estimated net worth: $30 million – $50 million

Last year, the charismatic preacher was at the center of a $35 million money laundering case in which he was accused of siphoning funds from his church to foreign banks. Pastor Chris pleaded no wrongdoing and the case was eventually dismissed. His church, Christ Embassy, boasts more than 40,000 members, several of whom are successful business executives and politicians. Oyakhilome’s diversified interests include newspapers, magazines, a local television station, a record label, satellite TV, hotels and extensive real estate. His Loveworld TV Network is the first Christian network to broadcast from Africa to the rest of the world on a 24 hour basis.

 3. Temitope Joshua

Church: Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN)

Estimated net worth: $10 million – $15 million

Nigeria’s most controversial clergyman is also one of its richest and most philanthropic. T.B Joshua heads the Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN), a congregation he founded in 1987, which accommodates over 15,000 worshippers on Sundays. The Pastor has remained controversial for several years for his inexplicable powers to heal all sorts of incurable diseases, including HIV/AIDS, cancer and paralysis. For miracle-craving worshippers, it’s the perfect seduction. The church currently has branches in Ghana, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Greece. In the past three years, he has given over $20 million to causes in education, healthcare and rehabilitation programs for former Niger Delta militants. He owns Emmanuel TV, a Christian television network, and is close friends with Ghanaian President Atta Mills.

 4. Matthew Ashimolowo

Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC)

Estimated net worth: $6 million – $10 million

In 1992, Foursquare Gospel Church, a Nigerian church, sent Ashimolowo to open a satellite branch in London. But Pastor Matthew had other ideas and decided to set up his own church instead. Today, his Kingsway International Christian Center is reportedly the largest Pentecostal church in the United Kingdom. In 2009, the church posted profits of close to $10 million and assets worth $40 million. Ashimolowo earns an annual salary of $200,000, but his real wealth comes from varied business interests including his media company, Matthew Ashimolowo media, which churns out Christian literature and documentaries. Ashimolowo’s representatives did not respond to a request confirming his net worth and ownership of all these assets.

 5. Chris Okotie

Church: Household of God Church

Net worth: $3 million -$10 million

Pastor Okotie made his first success as a popular pop musician in the 80s. He found the light, embraced the bible and set up the Household of God Church, one of Nigeria’s most flamboyant congregations. His 5,000 member church consists predominantly of Nollywood celebrities, musicians, and society people. He contested and lost Nigerian presidential elections for the third time this year under the Fresh Party, a political party he founded and funds. An automobile lover, he owns a Mercedes S600, Hummer and Porsche among several others.

An electrical fire was on Thursday morning reported at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

An eyewitness said the fire emanated from some cables, which apparently melted under heat.

This led to a blackout in the airport terminal while fire fighters deployed swiftly in the affected area to quench the inferno.

The fire fighters were able to put the situation under control while securitymen erected a metal barricade around the site.

In a separate incident, a cargo plane blew off the roof of a parking lot at the airport on Wednesday night, causing damage to some cars.

The extent of damage has yet to be ascertained.

Topic: Sexiest Woman Alive: Mila Kunis Without Makeup

Mila Kunis was photographed without makeup, as she was hanging out with her boyfriend, Ashton Kutcher. The two actors appeared to be very familiar with each other and this is a sign that they got accustomed with their relationship.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were seen walking Ashton’s dog on the streets of Los Angeles.

However, this was not the best day for Mila Kunis, as you can probably see in the photo. She was not wearing any makeup and she had dark circles under her eyes.

Mila and her boyfriend, Ashton, had casual outfits for their dog walk, and Mila didn’t even bothered to put on some makeup and arrange her hair. And, let’s face it, when you get the title of the sexiest woman alive, you don’t really want to leave your house looking like that, especially since you’re also a very famous Hollywood actress.

Esquire Magazine gave Mila Kunis the title of the sexiest woman alive in November of this year.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have been dating ever since April of this year, after Ashton Kutcher got separated from actress Demi Moore.

Mila Kunis made her TV debut in “That ’70?s Show”.

After she voiced Meg Griffin in “Family Guy”, Mila Kunis also starred in some box office hits such as “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, “Max Payne” and “The Book of Eli” however the role that made her career in Hollywood was the role in “Black Swan”, a role that brought her the Macello Mastroianni award.

Topic: Christopher Katongo Wins BBC African Player Of The Year 2012

Zambia captain Christopher Katongo has won the 2012 BBC African Player of the Year Award following a period of online voting and text messaging from fans.

The 30-year-old  faced stiff opposition from the likes of Demba Ba, Didier Drogba, Younes Belhanda and Yaya Toure but won a little over 40% of the votes. He also becomes the first winner from southern Africa to win this award.

Speaking to BBC immediately after the announcement, the Zambian legend was full of praise as he thanked those who recognised his hardwork and voted for him.

Quote
“This is a fantastic moment for me. I thank the people who voted for me. It is something I will never forget in my career.” He said.

He also thanked his teammates – both country and club for helping him achieve this coveted award on the continent.

Quote
“This means a lot for the young people and the young players who look up to me. I could not have achieved this without the support of my team-mates.” He said.

Katongo led his home country to win their first-ever African Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea in February last year. He scored four goals in the competition including a successful penalty kick that won the Chipolopolos their trophy. He currently plays for Henan Construction FC in the Chinese Super League.

Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's mother freed by kidnappers

Nigeria's Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in March 2012 Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, an internationally respected economist, has tried to tackle corruption in Nigeria

The mother of Nigeria's Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been released five days after she was kidnapped, Delta state governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has told the BBC.

He said Kamene Okonjo, a retired professor, was dropped off on a main road near her home in southern Nigeria.

Kidnapping is common in southern Nigeria, where it is a lucrative criminal enterprise.

It is not clear if Mrs Okonjo, 82, was held for political or financial gain.

Mr Uduaghan said her captors had probably decided to let her go because they were under pressure.

"The army and police have been on their trail and a lot of raids have been done. I think because of the heat they dropped her off on the highway," he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

Dozens of people were reportedly detained on Thursday during the search for Mrs Okonjo.

Earlier this week finance ministry spokesman Paul Nwabuikwu said that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala had been threatened recently.

He confirmed Mrs Okonjo's release, but gave no further details, AP news agency reports.
Driver arrested
It is not clear if a ransom was paid.

The governor said it was not government policy to pay ransoms but families sometimes negotiate with the kidnappers privately.

"For this one we also insisted that we would not pay any ransom [and] as a government we would not negotiate with anybody," he said.

Mrs Okonjo, who was released at about 10:30 local time (09:30 GMT), was currently sleeping and would be questioned about her ordeal later, Mr Uduaghan said.

The young man who had dropped off Mrs Okonjo has been arrested and is being questioned, he said.

BBC Nigeria correspondent Will Ross says kidnappings are so common in the country that they rarely make front page news.

Many businessmen, footballers and academics have been kidnapped for ransom in the south in recent months.

In the past, only foreign oil workers used to be targeted, our reporter says.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, 58, is an internationally respected economist who has led a high-profile campaign to clean up corruption in Nigeria, particularly in a controversial fuel subsidy programme.

She has delayed the payment to fuel importers, seeking better verification of claims for subsidies.

Mrs Okonjo is a medical doctor and retired professor of sociology at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka.

Her husband, Obi Chukwuka Okonjo Agbogidi, a retired professor of economics, is the traditional ruler of the Ogwashi-Uku kingdom in Delta State.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala was one of the leading candidates to take over the World Bank this spring. She was previously the institution's managing-director but lost out to the Korean-American, Jim Yong Kim.

Egypt crisis: Rival rallies as referendum looms

Egyptian opposition supporter stands near Egyptian riot police deployed outside the presidential palace in Cairo on 14 December 2012

Supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi are staging final rallies ahead of a referendum on a draft constitution which is due to start on Saturday.

Opponents say the draft constitution, backed by the Islamists including the president, is poorly crafted.

They criticise what they call an attempt by the president to push it through without proper consultation.

The controversy has sparked bloody clashes across Egypt.
I will boycott this referendum... This country doesn't need more division”
End Quote Nadia Cairo housewife
As the start of the referendum nears, security is tight, with tens of thousands of police and troops deployed to keep order.
President Morsi has also given the army the power to arrest civilians, raising fears that Egypt is moving back towards military rule.
A new Egyptian constitution is seen as a major milestone following the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
Polls will open at 08:00 (06:00 GMT) on Saturday in Cairo, Alexandria and eight other provinces. The other half of the country will vote a week later.

Polling had to be spread out because so few judges were willing to supervise the vote.

Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who heads the National Salvation Front, wrote on his Twitter feed: "Insistence on referendum in an explosive, polarised, chaotic and lawless environment is leading country to the brink."

Earlier this week, leading opposition figure Hamdeen Sabbahi said the Front would still call for a boycott if key conditions were not met by Saturday.

On Friday it was unclear if a boycott would be called.

Last weekend, President Morsi offered a concession to the opposition by annulling a 22 November decree that gave him sweeping new powers.

Topic: Desperation??? Bisi Ibidapo Names Her Baby After Dino Melaye

You claimed you got pregnant for a man, another woman's husband. The married man said you're not telling the truth. He said you're a specialist in blackmailing, that he's not your first victim and may not be the last.

In African tradition, before the invention of DNA, the belief was that a woman always knows the rightful father of her child. And so despite denials, despite controversy, ace actress, Bisi Ibidapo Obe, has insisted that the father of her child is Dino Melaye, the former Nigeria’s House of Representatives member from Kogi state.

According to TheSun online, Bisi unveiled the identity of her baby’s father when she formally made his name public. In a christening ceremony at her Magodo residence, in Lagos, Friday, which had family members and close friends in attendance, Bisi’s baby was named Precious Oluwajomiloju Abikeade Melaye.

The ceremony, which was done by clerics from Celestial Church of Christ, also featured a lavish reception party immediately at a nearby hall. Decked in all white iro and buba attire, Bisi was all smiles, as she cuddled her baby.

The paternity of the child has been the subject of dispute between the actress and Melaye.stial Church Of Christ on Friday 7th December, 2012.
